This weeks artist: Blood Orange

Album: Coastal Grooves

Rating: 9/10

Devin Hynes is a master of minimalism. The drums, simple guitar grooves and background synths make this album sound like we’re back in 2007 with shitty VHR camera, recording a drive down the California (I live in Houston so I’d just have to imagine going down the road in Galveston) coast, with your friend putting their head out the window like we’re all in a movie. The sounds chosen by Dev, makes it all feel like a drunken haze of memories we won’t ever forget.

Champange Coast

This song, for me is a 10/10. The feeling is indescribable, with the creeping synth at the beginning of the song giving that unsure feeling to the drums giving that dirty white girl dancing feeling. The guitar riff comes in at such a perfect time coupled with the garbled lyrics toward the end. This song really to me feels like locking eyes with that person you’re scared to talk to a party but you’re both drunk as helllll and it just feels like you two are the only people that exist at that particular moment in time. the background vocals sit so perfectly within the mix, and makes it all feel like a dreamlike moment.

The Complete Knock

This song I’d have to go a 8/10. To me Dev is trying to singout to someone he knows, asking them what the “hell” is wrong with you. he’s asking them why aren’t you out there taking control of your life, you’re merely seconds away from being lost and driven to a complete knock (this is how I constantly feel). The funky guitar mirrors Champagne coast but in a way that is more prevelant and makes you wanna just let it all out, like you’re kind of angry but really you’re confused with your emotions. Coupled with that dirty slightly distorted bass, and the reverbed out drums, this song gives me that angry west coast feeling of being lost.

Sutphin Boulevard

Man this song feels like a love child between Alex Turner and Thom Yorke, I’m going to go 9/10. From the feeling of the drums to the hard to understand lyrics, Devin perfectly spins his own style on a feeling of transition into adulthood. It grapples with a concept of escapism, and materialism, as sometimes we blur the line between a deep rooted need for validation with material desires, and lust. In my opinion, I believe Dev is trying to make us come to terms with understanding our own wants and needs and that sometimes we must approach ourselves with a little bit of compassion and honesty.

I just love music, if you ever have an album or song for me to listen to please reach out to me on instagram or email me (email’s down below)!
